collected pictures 1

Hi been a long time and as you might have noticed I have gone gluten free and started a new gluten free blog.
So I am just uploading collected pictures of baking since we last spoke to tidy up so to speak.
Who knows what the future may bring?

Chocolate tart

Blueberry cookies

A small slice of chocolate tart

Here is a short selection of my diet as it was, in July 2012 if I am reading the mobile date correctly.
Doesn't it look healthy and fairly minimal gluten by coincidence.
As a matter of interest, if anyone is interested, I have gone down from 95k to 85k now. That is weight, not salary unfortunately.
So here is some good looking tray bakes and other snacks. I will leave out the plates of egg, chips and beans and bars of chocolate that interrupted my perfect diet hee hee.

A nice little before and after tray bake featuring sweet potatoes and butternut squash if memory serves me.

Tasty looking tray bake

Another tasty wholesome before and after tray bake

    Now for some tasty sandwiches,
I'm going to have to practice my bread making to get a good gluten-free sandwich loaf.

Do I know how to make a great sarnie or what?

Home made jam! Apple and blueberry if memory serves me well

Another great sandwich from Pa

And some nice fruity snacks to cleanse the palate

Self explanatory I think but I'm getting peckish just posting it.

A little bit of fun to finish today I think.

Playing with your food is great fun
Well if anyone finds and reads this thanks for looking and remember to taste and enjoy whatever you eat.

Just found most of these pictures in previous post DOH!

My Vegetarian Diet Day ?3 19/07/12

Hi everybody, doing this next morning but quite early :-) yesterday did finally manage Plus1 Fukushima Food my thoughts on the Japanese starting to sell marine produce from the nuclear coast. Check it out after reading my Diet of the Day ho ho.

  Breakfast

      2 Bananas

  Lunch

      2 x wholemeal bread sandwiches

Brie with chilli, tomato, onion, sweet pepper, sultanas

  Dinner

      2 slices of honeydew melon
      2 slices of pineapple

      Traybake with sunflower oil

Butternut squash, sweet potato, potato, bell pepper, mushrooms,
      onion

Well there you have it, a glamour page of photos as well, i hope my diet looks more interesting than it reads. I got a real taste for the pineapple, it is just perfectly sweet and juicy at the moment. I must admit though that dinner filled me so much i couldn't even manage my supper oranges. That is the power of good food. Please spare a thought for the Fukushima residents and their food.

So enjoy your food because you are what you eat.

15/07/12

Hola,
Well here i am back from sunny holidays.

First the bad news, i lost my notebook with my food log in it somewhere on the way to Spain, so i have got no chance of catching up with my vegetarian diet log on here. That has taken a natural pause, though i intend to resume tomorrow.

Second the good news, in Spain i included a lot more fresh fruit in my diet and i intend to try and maintain that now i am home. So much fruit available everywhere in Spain but there is plenty in England as well. Shopping today, as well as my favourite bananas i also picked up a pineapple, a smallish honeydew melon and a bag of Valencia oranges. :-)

Thirdly i am going to be experimenting with technical issues of this blog, such as hierarching and grouping to make accessing your favourite section easier and to try and stop my diet dominating, as it does now. So don't be surprised if you encounter strange and unpredictable results over the next week or so.

Whatever you eat, always appreciate your food.

Plus 1, Fukushima Food, marine radiation

       Fukushima Food

http://www.ajc.com/business/japan-sells-first-fish-1463824.html

I finally get to write this story, last time i messed up saving and lost it.
Some might wonder why on a vegetarian food blog i should be writing about seafood but this is part of the Plus. Not just for the people and other life of the Fukushima area but the whole world.
It arises because as the Fukushima crisis developed, large quantities of water which was hosed in for cooling accumulated and became radioactive. It then became a problem in itself and as an emergency solution it was discharged into the ocean. Here it was hoped it would disperse and disappear. Ha ha.
Of course radiation is not like that. The Iodine has a short half-life and is expected to be gone by now. The Cesium remains a problem and no-one is even talking about Uranium or Strontium which are known to have been released in the plant.
This might seem a problem for the Japanese and a long way away but discharge to the ocean or other body of water is still the usual way of dealing with problems in nuclear plants, certainly in the UK.
The Japanese are the first to have to address this problem publicly.
The octopus and marine snails released for consumption are free of radiation, the Iodine having been considered to have been and gone. As far as i am aware though, there has been no testing to see if it has left any lasting damage to DNA or other proteins, nor any carcinogenesis etc., or what risks there may be if these are positive and pass up the food chain.
The people of Fukushima seem to be buying this mostly to support the local fishing industry, which traditionally is a pillar of the local economy. Of course the catch is not being sold outside the Fukushima area and it seems as if the goodwill of the locals is being used to treat them as human guinea pigs.
There are massive implications for such a large radioactive discharge into the ocean. It doesn't simply dissipate, it travels with the currents and tides and bio-accumulates, passing up the food chain.
It is going to be a problem for years and needs to be monitored closely. The Japanese are the first to my knowledge to address this problem, however simply, and there is much pressure from the global nuclear industry to just make it go away.
The implications are for everyone not just seafood eaters. This has turned into a very different post to my first one, for better or worse. Still i offer my best wishes to the people and all life of the Fukushima area. Get well soon. :-)

Enjoy your food everybody, think a little about where it comes from and how it is produced.

Japan sells first fish caught since nuclear crisis

The Associated Press
TOKYO — The first seafood caught off Japan's Fukushima coastline since last year's nuclear disaster went on sale Monday, but the offerings were limited to octopus and marine snails because of persisting fears about radiation.

The first fishing catch from Japan’s Fukushima coastline since last year’s nuclear disaster went on sale Monday, but was limited to octopus and marine snails because of persisting fears about radiation. They were caught Friday, and were boiled so they last longer while getting tested for radiation before they could be sold Monday. The sign reads: Sales started! Octopus and whelk, a kind of marine snail, were chosen for the initial shipments because testing for radioactive cesium consistently measured no detectable amounts, according to the Fukushima Prefectural (state) fishing cooperative. They were caught Friday and boiled so they last longer while being tested for radiation before they could be sold Monday.
Flounder, sea bass and other fish from Fukushima can't be sold yet because of contamination. It was unclear when they will be approved for sale as they measure above the limit in radiation set by the government. The government is testing for radioactive iodine as well, but its half-life is shorter than cesium and thus is less worrisome.
"It was crisp when I bit into it, and it tasted so good," said Yasuhiro Yoshida, who oversees the seafood section at York Benimaru supermarket in Soma, which sold out of about 30 kilograms (65 pounds) of the snails and 40 kilograms (90 pounds) of the octopus that had been shipped to the store.
The March 11 earthquake and tsunami last year left the coastlines of northeastern Japan devastated, and displaced tens of thousands of people. Entire towns were contaminated by the radiation leaking from Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, where three reactors went into meltdowns.
"I was filled with both uncertainty and hope today, but I was so happy when I found out the local supermarket had sold out by 3 p.m.," said Hirofumi Konno, an official in charge of sales at the fishing cooperative in Soma city in coastal Fukushima.
He said he hoped crabs would be next to go on sale as radiation had not been detected in them, but he acknowledged things will take time, perhaps years, especially for other kinds of fish. Radiation amounts have been decreasing, but cesium lasts years.
The octopus and snail were selling at almost half of what they fetched before the disaster, he said. But he said people were buying Fukushima seafood to show support for local fishermen. The items were available locally but not in the whole prefecture or the Tokyo area.
Nobuyuki Yagi, a University of Tokyo professor studying the fisheries industry after the disaster, said serious concerns remain over whether anyone would buy Fukushima fish, and the key lay in finding the types of fish that don't store radioactive elements.
"Fishing cannot survive unless people buy the fish. That may seem obvious, but Fukushima is facing up to this," he said in a statement earlier this month.
Farmlands have also been contaminated, and every grain of rice will be tested at harvest in some areas before they can be sold. The image of Fukushima produce has been seriously tarnished, and worried consumers, especially those with children, are shunning Fukushima-grown food.
"We are in for the long haul," Konno said in a telephone interview.

Looks like i am eating a lot of Brie, the only easy munchy in the fridge, will have to think about that.
Yes, there are a lot of noodles in my diet, I hope that is a good thing. I am trying to cut out bread products as my main carb. Noodles and potatos are replacing, though i have now finished that bag of spuds. Don't normally buy reds but have enjoyed them and they haven't sprouted as quickly as whites normally do.
Would type more but i am involved in a long winded and irritating internet 'chat' with my mobile phone providers. Wishing I hadn't had so much coffee today. Grrr.

Have fun people and whatever you are eating today, remember to appreciate it.

My Vegetarian Diet Day 4 27/06/12

Well this turned out to be a busy day, involving quite a lot of walking and finishing with a right old palaver. One important point was weighing myself at the doctors, 95 kilo, so i will adopt that as my base starting weight and my doctors scales as my reference. I don't have scales at home but do attend the doctors fairly regularly so can always hop on there. I don't want to be checking myself every day but i would like to get down to about 75 kilo, so i have a long way to go.

Evening

   1        Pint of water
   Mug of tea with milk.

Well that was a busy day but seem to be getting on top of the coffee and when i had a palaver didn't scream, well, only by text.
Got a weight now and a target to reduce to, and writing this, keeping my food log, is making me really aware of what i am eating.
Good, and bad, i don't casually buy munchies, not keeping any in the house, apart from fruit and yoghurt but am starting to get cravings.
Still little treats can come, must remember it's only 3 days since my footy binge.
Goodness though, i could really trash a pack of bikkies right now.
    Good eating folks
